Lower Sacramento River
Fly fishing on the Lower Sacramento in December is like waltzing into a less-than-frosty coliseum where you’re both the performer and the spectator. Look… I gotta write this stuff so I’m going to sound sorta funny on occasion. The weather, with its brisk days and the sun barely peeking over the horizon, can feel like an otherworldly experience during the winter months. But fear not, the river remains clear and healthy, providing the best fly fishing in the west for wild rainbow trout.
I did say “Rainbow Trout”! They’re abundant. You will get tight to them. They fight hard. Bring a 6wt rod. If you are not sure what to talk about at the Christmas party or the New Years Eve party, come see me. We will at least produce some tall fish tales. With every cast, every drift, you’re engaging in a ritual as ancient as the river itself. Here, the river whispers, “Today, you might learn the virtue of patience.” That is until your next fly fishing vacation.
Embrace the dance with the waters, for it’s not merely about the fish you land but the narrative you’ll spin from your day. And who knows, perhaps today is when the river deems you worthy of that elusive 28″ giant, not just another story to tell over coffee on a dreary Monday morning but one that will distinguish you among the greats.

Trinity River
If you’re mulling over a steelhead fishing escapade on the Trinity River this December, the lore from the local Sasquatch suggests a chilly but potentially rewarding quest. Fishing, much like life, is all about playing the odds – no promises, just possibilities. Yet, with the river’s fame, the seasonal timing, and if luck (or a good rain) is on your side, you could be amidst steelhead glory – countless numbers.
Prepare yourself, keep an eye on those updates from yours truly, and who knows, you might be the one narrating a tale of triumph, not tragedy, with a hefty anadromous beast over 22 or even 32 inches. So bundle up, get ready for possibly just one glorious tug and jump, and as they say in the most obscure fishing hideaways of the cosmos, “May the steelhead be with you!”

Klamath River
I’m not offering fly fishing on the Williamson River above Upper Klamath Lake this December, following the dam removal on the Klamath this river is tributary too, but it could become a reality in the future. We are sort of wading into a stream of transformation. It’s not the peak season for fishing, but according to the Klamath Sasquatch, there’s still a chance to hook into some salmon and, without a doubt, steelhead in the waters of the Klamath, but it’s a frontier at this time. Water conditions are silty and will no doubt get worse with any ounce of rain… but Salmon and Steelhead in the Williamson? – crazy, right?
So, dust off your 7wt or maybe bring along the 6wt as well, and dive into this ecological renaissance – next year. You might just contribute to a narrative where not only the fish but the river itself is staging a comeback. Remember, with the newfound freedom for the salmon comes a great responsibility for us anglers to fish ethically – catch and release only.
Happy fishing, or as they might say in the galaxy’s most remote fly fishing club, “May the steelhead be with you!” (Yeah, yeah, I know… I’m working on it.)
