Trinity River Fishing Report – December Steelhead Season

It’s officially GO TIME for steelhead fly fishing on the Trinity River! I am getting into excellent numbers of fish from Lewiston all the way down river. A couple trips down to Willow Creek has produced spectacular results. As we close in on January, expect better fishing above Del Loma and into the waters around Lewiston. Wetter whether and snow in upper elevations are keeping tributaries flowing strongly. Steelhead are on the move. There is not a “hot” spot on the Trinity for now as water conditions are evening the playing field. My strategy these days is covering a maximum amount of water, keeping flies in the river and focusing on any slight tug or bobber bounce. It’s the little indictors that signal the possibility of a pod of steelhead residing just out of sight.

Pro Tip: December through February is hands-down the best time to target steelhead on the Trinity. The combination of fresh runs, cooler water temperatures, and prime conditions creates the perfect setup for winter steelheading.

Whether you’re a seasoned angler or new to steelhead fly fishing, now is the perfect time to hit the water. If you’d like to set up a guided trip, give us a call—we’d love to help you make the most of this incredible season!

Hot flies:

  • #8 Brown Rubber Legs
  • Orange beads 8mm
  • Salmon, Orange, Shrimp Pink Micro-Spawn Eggs
  • TB Golden Stone #8

I recommend swinging or drifting the small nymphs and rubber legs. Actually, all flies drifted under and indicator will produce. Change flies regularly and try new patterns and recommendations where ever you find them. I am fishing my guests out of my roomy, comfortable drift boat. You will have time to relax and take in the scenery between intervals of fishing. I have drinks, food. Let me know what I need to bring other than sandwiches, water, soda. I will gladly meet and exceed expectations. We can swing flies in the upper river. Wading is easier up there. The lower river, near Junction City, offers limited options, but great water for switch rods and green water.

I have calendar dates available and can’t wait to take you and yours fishing. Contact me at (530) 338-1714 or send me a message using my form below:
