Trinity River Steelhead Fly Fishing Guide

When is the best time for steelhead on the Trinity River?
December through February is hands-down the best time to target steelhead on the Trinity, per Matt's reports. Fresh runs, cooler water and prime conditions line up then. Autumn through late spring is the main steelhead season, and the first big rain, typically late December, improves conditions.
How big are Trinity River steelhead?
Most Trinity River steelhead range 3 to 5 pounds, and some surpass an impressive 10 pounds. Winter fish are known to close in on 8 and even 10 pounds, which is why Matt recommends a 9.5-foot 7-weight rod as ideal.
What should I bring for a winter Trinity trip?
Insulated waders and wading boots one or two sizes up, layered clothing with a waterproof shell, waterproof gloves, a hat and beanie, thick socks, a neck gaiter, rain gear and hand warmers. Bring a California fishing license if over 15 and a steelhead report card.
Why hire a Trinity River fly fishing guide?
Steelhead move with flow, water quality, time of day and temperature, so they can be 30 miles up or downstream of the best-looking water. With over 25 years guiding the Trinity for steelhead, Matt keeps your flies in the best water at the right time, and knows access points from Lewiston to Junction City and Del Loma that are often blocked by private property.
What rod and flies work on the Trinity?
Matt recommends a 9.5-foot 7-weight with an adjustable-drag reel and a floating line. He fishes indicators from the boat to cover water, with flies such as #4–8 brown rubber legs, #10 jigged Poxyback stones, #14 Poxyback hare's ears, TB Golden Stone #8 and pink or orange micro spawn eggs. Rods, reels and flies are provided.
Where should I stay?
Weaverville is central, with hotels and restaurants. Indian Creek Lodge sits between Weaverville and Lewiston, and the Lewiston Hotel, Lewiston Inn and Lewiston Valley Motel & RV Park are on the upper river, where Matt often guides in winter.
