Current Trinity River Fly Fishing Report: 05.13.2024
Almost summer! The Trinity is buzzing with energy! That’s for sure. What kind of energy? Well, not exactly “great fishing” energy. The energy is in the form of water flow. As of Wednesday, April 24th, with a hearty flow of 8,500 CFS (Cubic Feet Per Second), the fishing has taken a back seat to rafting, kayaking. Current flows are down to 3600 CFS and still too high for the best angling opportunities.
What about the fishing? A little more detail…
If you feel you must go, then here is an approach that will maximize your chances:
Insect hatches of golden stones are past their peak, but it is possible to find brown trout or an odd rainbow all too familiar with this food source. It is not exactly a ghost town out there on the Trinity River. The river is bustling with life, with numerous smolts darting through the water and a precious few mature steelhead remaining.
I expect better fishing starting in July. The lower flows of July and into August will coincide with better prospects as Chinook Salmon start to show up by late August along with Steelhead. By mid September, the Trinity River will be back in full-swing. No pun intended.

Hot flies:
- #8 Brown Rubber Legs
- TB Golden Stone #8
- #14-16 BH Poxyback Hares Ear
- #14 Cutters E/C Caddis
- #16-14 Micro May in black or brown
I recommend swinging or drifting the small nymphs and rubber legs. Actually, all flies drifted under and indicator will produce. Change flies regularly and try new patterns and recommendations where ever you find them. I am fishing my guests out of my roomy, comfortable drift boat. You will have time to relax and take in the scenery between intervals of fishing. I have drinks, food. Let me know what I need to bring other than sandwiches, water, soda. I will gladly meet and exceed expectations. We can swing flies in the upper river. Wading is easier up there. The lower river, near Junction City, offers limited options, but great water for switch rods and green water.
