Current Trinity River Fly Fishing Report: 03.01.2024
What a great, GREAT season it has been on the Trinity River. It is still going strong. However by mid month of March, we start to see more and more down run fish in the net. Not nearly as many fresh steelhead. There are late winter fish and they are incredible. But, I’m not going to find those fish daily. Maybe not for days. So, it is the end of the show, but the fat steelhead hasn’t sung yet.
What about the fishing? A little more detail…
Water conditions are amazing. The lower we go though, the muddier it can be. But, a day or two after rains and we find green water and so much potential. There’s always going to be brown trout. And there are insect hatches of Skwala Stones, March Browns, the biggest Blue Wing Olives found anywhere. And we find steelhead and brown trout sipping duns and emergers mid day. Some of the most epic days fly fishing the Trinity River, at least in my memory, all occur during the Month of March.
Plus the river isn’t so pressured during March. Solitude abounds. It’s a scrumptious time.

Hot flies:
- #8 Brown Rubber Legs
- TB Golden Stone #8
- #14 BH Poxyback Hares Ear
- #14 Cutters E/C Caddis
- #10 Rogue Foam Skwala
- #16 Parachute Adams
I recommend swinging or drifting the small nymphs and rubber legs. Actually, all flies drifted under and indicator will produce. Change flies regularly and try new patterns and recommendations where ever you find them. I am fishing my guests out of my roomy, comfortable drift boat. You will have time to relax and take in the scenery between intervals of fishing. I have drinks, food. Let me know what I need to bring other than sandwiches, water, soda. I will gladly meet and exceed expectations. We can swing flies in the upper river. Wading is easier up there. The lower river, near Junction City, offers limited options, but great water for switch rods and green water.
