Trinity River Steelhead - Matt Dover Fly Fishing

Current Trinity River Fly Fishing Report: 12.01.2023

We are nearing the end of the Autumn season and with that, sometimes the busy crowded season on the Trinity River. Winter weather can make for the best steelhead fly fishing of the season for those who are courageous enough or really… for those who just know better.

I expect the Trinity River to fish great all month! Sometimes, the best fishing coincides with the most solitude this river offers as we close in on the holidays. While most angers have either already come and gone, or have booked their fly fishing dates after the first of the year, its those weeks leading up to and past the 25th of the month where I have a greater command of the waters on this wonderful river.

What about the fishing? Exactly.

It has been amazing. One of the best autumn seasons ever. You chances at getting tight to Trinity River fury is twice as good thanks to the large return we are experiencing. I expect better fishing heading into the winter months. Book with confidence.

Hot flies:

  • #8 Brown Rubber Legs
  • TB Golden Stone #8
  • Just about any small nymphs in brown or black. Think #12 ~ 16
  • Red Copper Johns in #14 ~ 18
  • Glow Roe beads in 8mm
  • Shrimp Pink Micro-Spawn
  • Beaded Hare’s Ear #14

I recommend swinging or drifting the small nymphs and rubber legs. The red copper john and beads are best drifted under an indicator. Actually, all flies drifted under and indicator will produce. Change flies regularly and try new patterns and recommendations where ever you find them.

I have calendar dates available and can’t wait to take you and yours fishing. Contact me at (530) 338-1714 or send me a message using my form below:
