Current Lower Sac Fly Fishing Report: September 2023
The river conditions are amazing. And we expect that in early autumn. I am find the usual rainbow trout throughout the entire length from Redding to Red Bluff. Love this time of year! Weather is at it’s best, fall is in the air. We are finding rainbows consistently all day long. Some are big, some smaller, none dissapoint. Great times!

Are there steelhead in the river?
Yes. Below Anderson. Chances improve as we pass Roosters Landing. I have found some impressive fish in the net since mid September and I expect chances for finding the classic Lower Sacramento River Steelhead only improving as we close in on November.
Hot flies:
- #6 -8 Brown Rubber Legs
- Brown Micro Mays #14 ~ 16
- Tan Poopahs #14
- Any kind of pattern that suggests caddis nymphs in #14 – 16
This river is best fished from a driftboat. Wading can be extremely dangerous. Even the shallowest of water imposes intense pressure on legs, competing with traction. In a driftboat we can put flies into the best water, over and over, maximizing your time by being amidst productive water all day.
