Trinity River Steelhead - Matt Dover Fly Fishing

Current Trinity River Fly Fishing Report: 01.10.2024

Happy New Year!!!

And what an incredible year it has been thus far. I haven’t seen this river fish as well since the early 2000’s. We are now in the middle of the season, early winter, and the Steelhead are far from disappointing us. Steelhead fishing is still a process of keeping the flies in the water, repeated presentations and time well spent in the right spots. What is the standout quality for January 2024 is most everyone who can get the flies near the best holding water are getting snug to Trinity River Steelhead. Glorious!

What about the fishing? Well let me tell ya…

I am fishing  lot below the Douglas City area. Water conditions are higher than October/November. Higher water conditions means more holding water for Steelhead and double the opportunities for successful results. Expect to dress warm! Bring a warm cap, a couple changes of warm gloves, polypropylene layers are a must.

And if you are not exactly sure how to dress or what to expect, well I have you covered. I’ll help you with getting outfitted, I have extra fly rods, reels and flies. You just need to show up, have a fishing license and a steelhead card, and I will keep you busy all-day-long throwing roll casts into the most beautiful water this side of British Columbia.

Call me or visit my contact page here and book with absolute confidence.

Hot flies:

  • #8 Brown Rubber Legs
  • TB Golden Stone #8
  • Shrimp Pink Micro-Spawn

I recommend swinging or drifting the small nymphs and rubber legs. Actually, all flies drifted under and indicator will produce. Change flies regularly and try new patterns and recommendations where ever you find them. I am fishing my guests out of my roomy, comfortable driftboat. You will have time to relax and take in the scenery between intervals of fishing. I have drinks, food. Let me know what I need to bring other than sandwiches, water, soda. I will gladly meet and exceed expectations.

I have calendar dates available and can’t wait to take you and yours fishing. Contact me at (530) 338-1714 or send me a message using my form below:
